Hi Ocean!!
Congrats!! you will very soon experience the joy of being a parent!
Anyway, may i ask why do you want to go through friends and relatives instead of an agent? We engaged the help of Mr Low from Greenhouse Adoption Agency. He is really extremely helpful and professional. and MCYS required us to produce the receipt of payment to the agency. So i am not sure if you go through your own means, will you hv any problems legally. pls find out b4 you proceed, ya?
Mr Low shared with us some pointers to take note of when you first meet the baby...
1) does the baby look alert?
2) if you are particular about the race, you must check that the "birth parents" are really the birth parents.
actually, it is really about feeling... Do you feel like you can bond with the baby? do you like the baby? it's very personal and cannot quite describe it until you meet the baby yourself...
More importantly, have you got your home study report done? we heard from Mr Low that MCYS requires potential adoptive parents to complete their HSR b4 they can bring the baby home. this is also one thing you must check out. coz at the time we adopted, we brought the baby home and did our HSR at the same time. now they have amended the policy. Parents must do the HSR first.
while getting all the legal papers done, buy the basic things you need like a cot/playpen, clothes, bottles, nappies, etc etc etc. i was totally unprepared and in the end i ran around places to pick up hand-me-downs from my friends and rushed to kiddy palace to buy stuff. very rush and chaotic.
All the best, ocean!! update us with your adoption process and share with us your joy!!
